What sets us apart

Dr. Johnson has specialized in pediatric dentistry and caring for the children of Wellesley since 1997. We have a conservative, minimally invasive approach. We specialize in anxiety-sensitive care and include parents in treatment decisions. We also provide emergency support and preventive care from infancy through adolescence.

Options for dealing with tooth decay

Oftentimes, there are more conservative approaches to “drilling and filling”. When it’s clinically appropriate, we consider minimally invasive options that preserve as much healthy tooth structure as possible. Dental injections can be one of the biggest sources of anxiety for children. We use technology designed to provide more controlled, comfortable delivery of local anesthetic when appropriate.

Not all tooth decay is the same. While some decay may need more involved treatment, early-stage decay can often be managed with gentler approaches. Several minimally invasive options can help address decay. To help protect your child’s teeth, here’s a closer look at how decay can be treated in its various stages:

Early tooth decay can be managed with topical fluoride treatments, including varnish applied to the teeth and prescription-strength fluoride toothpaste for patients who need extra protection. Sealants cover the pits and grooves of back teeth to keep plaque and food particles out and may help prevent early decay. These options can be used alone or together, based on your dental care plan.

Additionally, our office offers Curodont treatment to remineralize early-stage cavities. Curodont is a great treatment option because it offers a non-invasive, pain-free way to slow and reverse early decay without drilling or anesthesia. Its biomimetic formula contains self-assembling peptides that promote natural remineralization of tooth structure, making it ideal for children who may be anxious about traditional dental procedures. The application is simple and quick. This easy, chairside process strengthens enamel and supports long-term oral health in a child-friendly, minimally invasive manner.

Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) may be used in some cases to stop advanced decay. SDF works by applying a liquid directly to the decayed area without drilling the tooth. We know the treatment has been successful when the treated area darkens. Applying SDF is quick and painless, and it is especially helpful for patients who have trouble sitting still during dental treatments. This is often a wonderful interim option as we work with patients to gain their cooperation and help them tolerate a traditional filling without sedation or general anesthesia.

The Soan Injection Tool: At our practice, we understand that dental anxiety—especially around needles—is one of the most common concerns for both children and their parents. The Soan is an advanced delivery system designed specifically to enhance comfort and precision during local anesthesia in pediatric patients.

The Soan tool enables controlled, minimally invasive anesthetic administration, significantly reducing the discomfort often associated with traditional syringe techniques.

Your first visit

Along with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, we recommend scheduling your child’s first dental visit by age one. We’ll do everything we can to make it a positive, enjoyable experience, helping your child feel comfortable and build trust for future visits. Dr. Johnson and his staff will explain each procedure and answer your questions, and we encourage your child to share any fears they may have. Parents are welcome to accompany their child in treatment areas.

Words matter. Try to avoid fear-provoking words like “shot” or “drill.” Our experienced team describes care in a positive way and helps anxious children feel at ease.

We’ll record your child’s dental and medical history, complete a comprehensive exam, discuss our findings, and share tips for maintaining good oral health and a healthy smile. Dr. Johnson is supported by a friendly, highly skilled team with specialized training in caring for infants, children, and adolescents. We’ve created a relaxing, child-friendly environment to make your child’s dental experience more comfortable. Our goal is to help children enjoy going to the dentist and carry that positive attitude into adulthood.

Financial

Payment Policy

We are not corporate. Our office is an “out-of-network” dental provider. Payment for dental services is due at the time of service unless other arrangements have been made in advance. We accept all major credit cards, personal checks, and Venmo.

Dental Benefit Plans

Your dental benefits plan is a form of reimbursement typically provided by your employer. Dental carriers will reimburse you directly based on your out-of-network benefits as defined by your plan. The contract between your employer and the insurance company determines that portion. We urge you to be fully aware of the provisions of your dental plan, and we are always happy to submit a pre-estimate for any recommended procedures in our office.

As a courtesy to you, our office will submit and follow up with your dental benefits carrier to help you receive the maximum reimbursement to which you are entitled.

Please contact us if you have any questions regarding our financial policies.
